SHAD VALLEY

Harvard and MIT summer programs: click here for more information

2009 was another outstanding program for Shad, with 500+ impressive participants building their networks and their resumes as part of a truly transformational experience.  It’s such a privilege to be part of unleashing the potential of such exceptional young people.  I appreciate your help in identifying candidates who make the program such a success, and hope your students enjoyed their experience.

I’m writing today to let you know of an important change at Shad Valley for the coming year.  As you likely know, Shad’s participant fee is far less than the full cost of a place at the program.  As a result, Shad has been in a deficit position for a number of years, and a fee increase is necessary to ensure Shad’s sustainability so Canada’s youth can continue to benefit from the program.

For 2010, the program fee will be $3500.  This represents 58% of the full program cost, which is approximately $6000.  Shad’s fundraising efforts with generous supporters across the country will continue to fund the balance.  In making this change, I acknowledge the increase will impact students and families.  I want to assure you that Shad remains fully committed to facilitating the participation of successful applicants, regardless of their family income.  No student should hesitate to apply because they’re not sure if they can afford the fee.  For many years, Shad has offered a significant financial awards package (bursaries and scholarships) and has worked with countless families to ensure their sons and daughters have a chance to benefit from Shad Valley.

Again this year, there will be 2 application intake dates – early December and mid-January.  Historically, a greater number of places have been awarded to students who apply in December, so it’s an advantage for your students to apply early.  This year’s application form is now online at www.shad.ca/apply, and complete packages of materials including brochures, applications, and posters will be in your school in early October.  If you need support to promote Shad Valley, or would like Shad’s help with a presentation, please let me know.

I look forward to meeting more of your outstanding students in July 2010.   Thank you for your continued enthusiasm for Shad Valley, and for encouraging your students to apply.  I know they appreciate your encouragement, and your confidence in their abilities.
