Don’t have the skills for a sport? Don’t have the patience for a club? Then there’s only one option:
Dragon Boat Don’t be fooled by the name, dragon boat is neither a dragon, nor a boat. It’s both! A dragon boat consists of 22 people, 10 on each side, one drummer, and one steersman (sweep). Basically, it’s a big canoe; the dragon comes into play during race day, where the head and tail of a dragon are placed at the tips of the boat for tradition as well as decorative/intimidation purposes.
Dragon boat is a fun way to meet some new friends while being active. And don’t be scared by the word “active”, no previous training is required for dragon boat. By race day, you will learn proper rowing technique and teamwork.
Dragon boat looks good on your resume, gives CAS hours for IB students, and is a great way to make some new friends. Practices will be at the Glenforest pool in the mornings; some practices are with a hired trained coach.
Ms. Dittrich is head of the club and is very excited about dragon boat this year. She has run dragon boat for many years at Glenforest and is proud to do so. Any questions, please feel free to ask her or the two captains: Howard Leung and Calin Mindrut.
What we want::: Students 16 years of age or older by race day in June :: Students that are committed to Dragon boat, as well as other events :: 20 students who want a nice upper body workout :: 2 students who are of small stature to be drummer/sweep :: Students who want to have fun in their last years of high school
